English Differently

Why Learning English is Like Playing Chess

Hi, my name is Martin. I’m here to help you succeed in the English-speaking world.

My mission is to support speakers of English as a second language to interact and communicate comfortably and confidently in English language cultures and societies.

Long before I ever thought about teaching English, I joined my school’s chess club. Chess became a big part of my life and I began to play it competitively. My love of chess and the discovery of its various leading players and grandmasters gave me an interest in Russia. I learned the basics of the language and travelled to Russia. I’ve now visited many areas of the country to play chess.

Learning chess is like learning a language. You begin with the basics and progress to increasing levels of complexity. To grow in confidence, you must practice regularly and be open to exploration and discovery.

From my experience learning Russian, I know that to become a confident speaker of a second language, you should immerse yourself in its culture as much as possible. I taught myself the basics of the Russian language, completed a GCSE and then studied it for a year at Moscow State University.

Familiarising myself with the language allowed me to travel across Russia and immerse myself in its culture. I’ve been exploring Russian in greater depth through my studies with a professor of Russian literature who’s based in St Petersburg.

For me, one of the greatest benefits of learning another language is understanding someone expressing themselves sincerely in that language, describing events that have shaped their lives and culture in their own words.

I believe culture is crucial for language learning. By reading as much as possible in your chosen second language, you discover more about it and become comfortable and confident speaking it.

You learn to love the language. This is how I approach teaching English.

What Makes English Differently Different?

You cannot underestimate the importance of context. To advance your English-speaking abilities, you must understand more than how people speak English. Where and when people speak it matters just as much, if you want to sound completely confident as an English speaker.

My English teaching methods focus on context. Whether you need English for work or your social life, I can help you speak it better to help you achieve your goals.

What you bring with you will help you learn – your favourite book, a film you find fascinating, even a textbook about the work you do.

I will teach you the English you need to improve your life.
